Bhaja Govindam – Sloka 32: Mūḍhaḥ Kaścana Vaiyākaraṇaḥ
Can intellectual knowledge alone reveal the true purpose of life?
In this episode of Hari Kavi Explains, we reflect on the thirty-second sloka of Bhaja Govindam, of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya which takes us back to the traditional setting associated with the origin of this timeless work.
The verse describes a learned grammarian deeply absorbed in the study of complex Sanskrit grammatical rules, particularly “ḍukṛñ karaṇa.” Despite his scholarship, he remained so occupied with technical learning that the deeper purpose of knowledge had escaped his attention.
According to the traditional account, the disciples of Adi Shankaracharya awakened the scholar to this higher understanding, reminding him that intellectual accomplishment, however impressive, cannot by itself lead to spiritual realization.
The teaching is not a rejection of scholarship or education. Rather, it asks us to consider what our knowledge ultimately serves. Learning becomes truly meaningful when it leads beyond intellectual achievement toward wisdom, self-inquiry, devotion, and an understanding of life's deeper purpose.
