Bhaja Govindam – Sloka 29: Arthamanarthaṁ Bhāvaya Nityam
Can wealth truly provide the security and happiness we expect from it?
In this episode of Hari Kavi Explains, we reflect on the twenty-ninth sloka of Bhaja Govindam, where Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya asks us to carefully examine our relationship with wealth.
Wealth is necessary for many aspects of life, but Shankaracharya reminds us that it cannot guarantee lasting happiness or freedom from fear. The more strongly we identify security with possessions, the more we may begin to fear their loss. Even relationships can become affected when wealth, inheritance, and ownership enter the picture.
The verse is not a rejection of earning, saving, or providing for our families. Rather, it cautions us against expecting wealth to provide something it cannot give—lasting inner peace.
Shankaracharya encourages us to use material resources wisely while recognizing their limitations. True security arises not merely from what we possess, but from developing contentment, wisdom, and freedom from excessive attachment.
